No. We expose suggestions via API. Your custom field can write back to Sanity using Sanity's own client — keeping you in control of all data mutations.

Is there an example Sanity Studio plugin?

We'll publish one alongside the public API in V2. In the meantime, the JSON shape is documented and small — you can wire it up in a couple of hours.
